|140. Cahoon Hollow Beach
26 x 42"
|Cahoon Hollow Beach is on the eastern (Atlantic) coast of Cape Cod, near Wellfleet. This scene is painted near sunset, when almost everybody has gone home.
Beaches are a challenge to paint, because there is little structure to work with: only a tight grouping of near-horizontal lines (below left). Cahoon Hollow Beach and its neighbors are exceptions, because there is a high bluff separating the beach from the inland Cape (below right). From atop the bluff, where there's a parking lot, you can look down on the ocean and surf and see the complex interplay of incoming waves and water washing back out to sea, especially at low tide when the action is spread out over shallow sand flats.
